Sporting Gijon's owner Alejandro Irarragorri has won another court case in Mexico. The Court of Coahuila has confirmed the decision not to prosecute the president of Grupo Orlegi in the tax fraud case related to Santos Laguna.
What happened?
The Mexican Tax Administration (SAT) claims that Santos Laguna improperly used the figure of risk premiums to pay more than 54 million pesos to players and technical staff, avoiding the payment of income tax (ISR) withholdings. However, federal judge Mauricio Urzúa Hernández had already concluded in October that there was not enough evidence to prosecute Irarragorri.
Why is it important for Sporting Gijon?
This resolution is important for Sporting Gijon because its owner, Alejandro Irarragorri, is no longer involved in the criminal proceedings. The team is currently 9th in Segunda División with 61 points, after winning its last game against Granada CF on May 30, 2026. Sporting Gijon has a record of 18 wins, 7 draws, and 17 losses in 42 games, with a goal difference of +6.
What comes next?
Although this resolution leaves Irarragorri out of the criminal proceedings, the tax administration can still appeal to the direct amparo to try to reverse the ruling. Meanwhile, Sporting Gijon continues to compete in Segunda División, aiming to improve its position in the table. With a streak of 5 consecutive wins, the team is in good form and seeks to continue adding points in the next games.
