Sporting Gijon opens 2026-27 season with historic queues at El Molinón
El Molinón woke up this Tuesday with hundreds of Sporting Gijon fans queuing to renew their season tickets for the 2026-27 campaign, a ritual the club keeps alive despite the online option. The line snaked all the way to the Carling Goal corner of the stadium, a clear sign of the excitement the new season is generating among the rojiblanca faithful.
Why did they choose in-person renewals in droves?
While the club allows online renewals, many supporters opted for the in-person process to collect their membership cards in person. Xuacu Rodríguez, president of the Peña Sentimiento Rojiblanco, arrived early to complete his renewal and explained the reasoning: “We could have done it online without any trouble, but this way we collect the card at the office. Those with direct debit are the last to receive theirs and don’t know their seat number until it arrives at home. It’s almost better to come here.”
Rodríguez emphasized the emotional weight of the day: “Today we renew our hopes, not just the season ticket. It’s like Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Three Kings’ Day. A fresh start. We trust the coaching staff and the team. We’re waiting for the Miramar match like water in the desert.”
Sporting Gijon’s current landscape
Sporting Gijon, who finished last season with 61 points (18W-7D-17L over 42 games) and averaged 60 goals scored to 54 conceded (+6 goal difference), are entering 2026-27 with ambition. Their last official result came on May 30, 2026, when they beat Granada CF 2-1 at El Molinón.
The rojiblanca faithful arrive with optimism after five straight wins at the end of last season — their latest five-game winning streak — though the target remains closing the 21-point gap to leaders Racing Santander. Their next test comes on September 6, 2026, when they host Girona on Matchday 1.
