Sporting Gijon has announced the signing of Jorge Sáenz, a central defender from Tenerife who becomes the second reinforcement for the 2026-2027 season. Sáenz, 29, expressed his excitement and gratitude for the club's trust, stating that he comes with great ambition and eagerness to contribute to the team. After undergoing a medical examination in Gijón, the player committed to the club until 2028. Sáenz's arrival is part of a broader plan to rebuild Sporting's defense, which struggled last season with 54 goals conceded. The new coach, Nicolás Larcamón, aims to implement a system with three central defenders and two wing-backs, making Sáenz's experience crucial. Additionally, the arrival of Uruguayan Emanuel Gularte is expected to further strengthen the defense. In the meantime, Sáenz will return to the Canary Islands to continue his physical preparation before joining Sporting Gijon's training sessions.
